| WHAT IS OpenPGP ? |
OpenPGP is a standard based on « Pretty Good Privacy »® or
PGP®, a strong encryption software written by Philip Zimmermann in
1991-1992. PGP® is perfect for Internet use and is very secure.
The OpenPGP standard is free and developped by the PGP/GnuPG users
community involved in the IETF (Internet
Engineering Task Force) OpenPGP
workgroup.
Actually, the OpenPGP standard has been adopted by :
– The GnuPG program, which is freely distributed under GNU GPL
licence by the Free Software Foundation.
– The OpenPGP Alliance, which is a consortium created by Philip Zimmermann, who created PGP
in 1991, then partipated in companies PGP Inc. and NAI/PGP Security
Inc. (he leaved NAI at the end of 2000). The OpenPGP Alliance aims at promoting
use of the OpenPGP encryption standard.
– The PGP® program, which is sold under commercial licence
by PGP Corp., and distributed under
non-commercial licence (freeware) by the MIT in USA/Canada and
by the International PGP Homepage
outside the USA.
